The locks are your opponent’s dynamite or honeybee powerups. Only you are allowed to use the dynamite/honeybees on your screen. To your opponent, they appear as locks.

To get a powerup, you must form a long chain. 6-8 item long chains create dynamite, and chains with 9+ items spawn honeybees.
